Hello, Marion:

I'm researching my daughter-in-law's father who was a Pfc in the 469th Engineer Maintenance Company from early 1943 through June 1945. An EMC just repaired the heavy equipment used by the combat engineers --- they didn't use it --- and generally worked on wrecked equipment as it went into a depot. Much of the time the 469th was very close to the 540th. I think their biggest claim to fame involves the various outboard motors that powered the rafts used to cross the Rhine.

In March 1945 they were assigned to the 1144th Engineer Combat Group, but the only web hit I get on the 1144th is from the 85th Heavy Ponton Company web site: the 1144th relieved the 85th at a floating bridge depot in Luneville on 19 March 1945.

Do you have any additional knowledge of the 1144th ECG? Maybe a link or two that isn't on your website?

Thanks,

Tom Morris

Hi Tom:

Sorry for the delay in reply, but have been out of town for a few days.

Nice to hear from you and of course always excited when I hear the 540th mentioned too. A real plus in my book.

I don't know of anything off-hand, but that certainly doesn't mean that I won't find something that I haven't stumbled across as of yet. There very well may be info amongst my books and even within the over 2000 pages of National Archived docs that I now have within my possession.

You did mention a few things that you found, but have you seen this PDF file? This is in regards to the 1144th. They are mentioned on the page seven.

I am going to place your request and my answer on the forum in the Engineer's section. In the meantime I will let you know if I come across any other info on the 1144th.

Thanks for writing. Would love to hear about the anything you have on the 540th. Consider adding it to the post I am going to place.

Regards,

Marion Chard

Tom,

My father, William Fedor, was also in the 469th Engineer Maintenance but he was attached to the 36th Division. If you still check on line please shout me a note so we can talk. He later became a sargent of the Motor Pool.
