Hi! I'm new to the forum. My grandfather died when I was 4, and my mom and I know very little about his service in the Corps of Engineers.
I have written for his service records and think they were in the big batch that burned.
Here's what I know, and I am hoping someone can help me decipher what's on his grave marker. And, if I'm really fortunate, someone may have served with him:
on his grave: 2751 Engr
HV Shop Co (I assume "heavy shop company?)
Name: Charles H. Jackson
born in Mississippi in 1918
Pvt
Enlisted May 1944 at Camp Shelby Mississippi
Served on Guam
Solomon Islands has been mentioned
Thanks,
Jenny
Hello Jennifer, welcome to the forum.
Yes you have the unit right, the 2751st Heavy Shop Company has a Campaign Credit for the Western Pacific, and a Meritorious Unit Commendation for 2 March - 2 Sept 45.
An Engineer Heavy Shop Company consisted of 6 officers and 165 enlisted men.
A semi-mobile unit, the heavy shop company performed fourth echelon maintenance on all equipment for which the Corps of Engineers had maintenance responsibility. Fourth echelon maintenance included rebuilding a units equipment, overhauling the the attachments and accessories, doing emergency overhaul of major units, and recovering equipment from the battlefield, reclaiming, and salvaging it.
We`ll see what other infomation we can come up with in the next few days on your grandfather`s unit so check back often,
A seach of NARA`s Enlistment Records for Charles H. Jackson brought up 45 records for that name, 2 from Mississippi, 1 born in 1927. this one was born in 1918 so most likely it would be your grandfather.

I found one website that lists the 2751st as being part of the 5th Naval Construction Brigade of the 76th Seabees on Guam. They are listed near the bottom of the page in the section of units they do not have histories for.
