  Humorus Eagle Trivia

humorous eagle trivia 101 airborne

One dark, foggy night at Bastogne, Henry Weston of F/502 left his dugout to urinate in the woods. When he returned, he told his buddies "I was pissing against the side of a tree, and the tree walked away!" Since Weston was the company clown, his buddies just laughed and thought he was joking. A few minutes later, Lt."Jungle Jim" Allen joined them in the dugout, and the men noticed that the side of one of his trouser

legs was wet.

Received this letter from Pete this week and was able to put him in touch with Bill Douglass of the 1301st Engineers.

Marion,

I noticed you had some postings related the 1301st. My uncle was in that unit and, since I am the only one in the family interested in history, I have a number of pictures and stuff that I have saved from the garbage heap. I'd love to get in touch with some other vets of the unit and share some of the history. Thanks.

They've Done Their Hitch in Hell 101st Airborne

by Jack E. Kline

We're sitting here and thinking of the things we left behind,

We'd hate to put on paper what is going through our mind.

We've dug so many foxholes, cleared many miles of ground,

A hotter place this side of hell we're sure cannot be found.

There is a certain consolation though, so listen while we tell,

When we die we'll go to heaven,

'Cause we've done our hitch in hell.

We've built up three kitchens, for Jerry bombed out two,

And there we'll meet three times a day to draw our daily stew.

We've dodged the het-hot shrapnel from the dirty Jerry bombs,

We've sweat and bled and hollered just to see our moms.

When our work on earth is finished, our friends behind will tell,

Those boys all went to heaven,

'Cause they done their hitch in hell.

We take our atabrine daily, those bitter little pills,

To build up our resistance to fevers, aches and chills.

"Put out those lights and cigarettes," we hear each sergeant yell,

"This ain't no Sunday picnic,

It's another hitch in hell."

When the final taps have sounded and we shed our early cares,

We'll pass in grand parade, we all, upon those golden stairs.

The angels there will greet us and their harps they'll gladly play,

We'll draw a hundred dollars and lose it in a day.

We'll hear Gabriel blow his trumpet and St. Peter loudly yell,

"Front seats you guys from the 101st,

'Cause you've done your hitch in hell."

  Denzel Washington

Paul Hinkle sent this to me. It's a great FYI.

------------

Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC (Brook Army Medical Center, in San

Antonio,Texas) the other day. This is where soldiers that have been

evacuated from Germany come to be hospitalized in the States, especially

burn victims. They have buildings there called Fisher Houses. The Fisher

House is a hotel that soldiers' families can stay at, for little or no

charge, while their soldier is staying in the hospital. BAMC has quite a

few of these houses on base, but as you can imagine, they are almost

filled to the brim most of the time. While Denzel Washington was

visiting BAMC, they gave him a tour of one of the Fisher Houses. He

asked how much one of them would cost to build. He got his check book

out and wrote a check out for the full amount right there on the spot.

The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear this story and want to get the

word out to the American public, because it warmed their hearts to hear

it. I hope you will spread this story.

Washington has a son who is a Marine in Iraq.

I wrote back to Paul and said this,

Wow, now I love him even more. I always loved him as an actor and he always seemed like a person of integrity. That is just great!

Staff Sergeant Antonio Rotondo - 48th CE
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 04-14-2005, 08:31 AM - Forum: LOOKING FOR... - Replies (5)

I received this today and forwarded it to Al Kincer of the 48th. I think we will be able to help someone have an extra special honeymoon in Italy. :pdt34:

---------------------------------------------------

I'm trying to find out information on the unit with which my Uncle Tony proudly served. I believe his unit may have been the 48th Combat Engineers. I know he served in Italy in 1943 and 1944. His unit was at Monte Cassino. His name is Staff Sergeant Antonio Rotondo and I know he was awarded the Bronze Star. He recently passed away. With regret I must say I never got the full details of his service. I am hoping you may have some information on where and what his unit may have done. I am going to Italy in June for my honeymoon and want to very badly retrace where he may have served. Any information you can provide me with will be greatly appreciated. I stumbled onto your website and found it to be very enlightening. Thank-you in advance for your time and help. My name is David Cercena, I'm a firefighter from Yonkers, New York...

Respectfully,

David
