  Gettysburg Address
Posted by: civilwargal - 11-12-2013, 03:04 PM - Forum: The US Civil War - Replies (3)

A week from today 11/19 will be the 100th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. This is a nice op ed piece written by Ken Burns. I have been at the re-dedication of the Cemetary on several occasions and it is very moving to see hundreds of people in Civli War attire on the Battlefield visiting the monuments of the units that they re enact.

He's 1-A in the Army and He's A-1 in My Heart

He's 1-A in the Army and He's A-1 in My Heart

Performed by Betty Bonney & Les Brown

Recorded October 15, 1941

Written by Redd Evans

From coast to coast in this great nation

Each man has got a classification.

I've got a guy who's really something

This man of mine, he ain't missin' nothin'.

No wonder I'm happy to say:

Chorus

He's 1-A in the army and he's A-1 in my heart,

He's gone to help the country that helped him to get a start.

I love him so because I know he wants to do his part,

For he's 1-A in the army and he's A-1 in my heart.

And just in case you're quizzical,

I'm gonna tell you now,

He passed the toughest physical--

He passed it, folks, and how!

For I know why he rates so high on Uncle Sammy's chart,

'Cause he's 1-A in the army and he's A-1 in my heart.

From coast to coast in this great nation,

Each man has got a classification.

Now I've got a guy who never liked to fight,

But for Uncle Sam he'll fight all right.

All ranks now exhausted - telegram is found

All ranks now exhausted': Desperate telegram that spelled end of A Bridge Too Far battle when 9,000 British paratroops launched bid to break into Germany is found

  • Battle of Arnhem was biggest airborne operation in history at the time
  • Allied troops were to seize eight bridges in German-held Dutch territory
  • But it was to prove too much and Allies were overcome by enemy forces
  • Now, the desperate telegram calling for reinforcements has come to light
