This is a veteran friend of Jim Hennessey, who is feeling pretty down. Jim thought it would be nice if some of us wrote to him, to try and cheer him up a bit. This is Jim's letter to his friend. I am including his mailing address too.

============

My Comrade In Arms

I hear you are not feeling that great. You know as a car gets older some parts wear out,if you can't get the exact part you have to improvise. Being your age I know what this means, but being our age I know God will fix the problem. I always felt God assigned me to the 87th, for I was lucky to be with men like yourself, for we fought strong and came home safe, that was a blessing in itself. What I mean to say whatever the enemy threw at us, God seen us through. In your time of ailments I want you to know you have God, Family, and devoted comrades along side of you.

Like the Acorn be Strong.

Yours In Eternal Comradeship

Jim Hennessey-E-345-87th

Enjoying Your Freedom

Here is Bob's daughter's letter to Jim:

Hi Jim:

Sorry I haven't written sooner, time is my worst enemy lately.

I read your letter to Dad, and he was so touched by your words, he had me put it up on his bulletin board, along with the picture of you and your wife, and he tells everyone about it and invites them to read it.

Dad is adjusting to life at the Nursing Home, knowing that Dad had attended daily Mass, and lead the Rosary everyday, they have asked him to lead the Rosary there at the Home, so he does everyday at 1pm. He has a hard time walking, and is in the wheelchair most of the time.

Today he said that he is very lonely, so I'm going to ask you once again, for a favor, if I gave you Dad's address, would you mind sending him a note? I am trying to get his address out to people other than family, so he gets cards from alot of different places, I think that it would be fun for him to see where they all come from.

You don't have to participate if you don't want to.

I try to spend as much time as I can with Dad, and it gets harder each time to leave.

Thank you for all you do, and for being such a good friend.

God Bless you!!

Karen

Thank-you so much!!

Dad will be so surprised to hear from you.

Hello Rocky:

Sure can! Ask and ye shall receive! Here's a start:

http://www.criba.be/fr/stories/detail/first-on-the-line-35th-engineer-combat-bn-159-1

I often include obit links when doing my research, for sometimes people have family members listed within, and have gotten answers. One thing I've found; you never know where your next flash of info will appear!

http://www.frankstoncitizen.com/julyobits02.html

While this one won't give you any info on the 145th , it is an interesting article about a man who was. It is known as the Easter Massacre in Washington State.

For further information, please see my research suggestions on my forum:

Two of the BEST sources are the Army Corps of Engineers, Office of History, and NARA in Maryland.

I hope this got you off to a good start. Let me know what transpires, and if I can offer more assistance.

Warmly,
Marion

  Farewell Marine
Posted by: sixgun - 02-02-2009, 07:25 AM - Forum: Veterans Tributes - Replies (3)

Farewell Marine

The combat boots are empty

and finally they're still,

They're set carefully at attention,

they've marched up their last hill.

The rifle, too, is silent now

and unwaveringly erected,

Holding up the well-worn helmet

of the Marine it once protected.

One by one his comrades

somberly draw near,

Each raising one last salute

unashamed to shed a tear;

A time-honored tribute,

dating back to days of old,

As a reverent memorial

a stirring image to behold.

It bears witness to the bond

of a brotherhood of men,

The kind who only come along

every now and then.

These men who pass will carry on,

they've a mission to complete,

For our Country they will fiercely fight,

our enemies they'll defeat.

But in his heart after this,

no Marine will be the same,

A hero is now known to him,

and bears his buddy's name.

Wherever duty takes him,

whatever battles he may fight,

Never will he forget the friend

who gave his life for what is right.

Finally, the bugle sounds

Taps is softly played,

Time to say farewell, and say

a prayer for the sacrifices made.

This day the names of those who died

will be added to the List,

They will forever be remembered,

and will undeniably be missed.

Next time you see a proud Marine

in that uniform he wears,

Know his heart is strong and true

please keep him in your prayers.

He lives by a vow to protect and defend

no matter what the cost,

But to every Marine, it carries a name...

his buddy who was lost.
