Received this wonderful letter yesterday. I am more than happy to comply and will share here and other places too. Thanks Joey!
Hi Marion,
I don’t know if you remember me or not but we were in contact several years ago. I am a Historian at The National WWII Museum in New Orleans. I hope things have been going well for you since the last time we were in touch. I am reaching out to you today to see if you could post a link on your website in an effort to assist a combat veteran from the 34th Infantry Division. I know many of the veterans who have posted on your site served in the 34th Infantry Division. The gentleman this article is about , John Knowles of Bonaire, GA, was wounded during combat operations in Italy and sent home. He never saw any of the guys from his outfit again. Now, he is hoping to find some of the guys he served with. Knowles served in Company I, 3rd Battalion, 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division in North Africa and Italy.
I know how passionate you are about our WWII veterans so when I came across this article you were the first person I thought of. Maybe if you can post this story somewhere, one of the 34th ID veterans who visits you site may know Knowles. The link to the article is –
Ah, two within a few days of each other. This is such a sad part of my job.

Received this a few days ago. I had the chance to meet and be with him on several occasions at the 36th Engineer Reunions. He was such a sweet man. Loved being around him. The first photo I attached is of Gene. The next is Gene and Margi and her dad (his brother). Both are now gone. Sigh!
It saddens me to announce that my wonderful Uncle Gene passed away Sunday morning. As many of you know he has been residing at Perry Point VA hospital and spent the last couple years suffering from Alzheimer’s. His latest setback was a fall, which resulted in a broken hip.
Although he was an Infantryman with the 79th, all of you made him feel welcome at the 36th Reunions and embraced him as one of your own, thanks for your love and support. Love you all!
