James A Demopoulos - Big Pete - 05-30-2007 James A Demopoulos
Excerpts from several letters.
I thought it would be interesting to tell his story here.
Erwin James A Demopoulos - Jeeper704 - 05-30-2007 Some of the photos I have of him ....
He is the soldier standing on the right.
Erwin James A Demopoulos - Walt's Daughter - 05-30-2007 Can't thank you enough for that one, Erwin. As you can imagine, I am always very eager to hear another engineer's story from the war. His personal recollections show everyone just how hard and tough it was being a combat engineer. They were up there right at the front and had to fight like anyone else. Many times had to clear the way to make it possible for their infantry brothers to get through.
Him recalling that close call gave me the "willies". Whew! Talk about just missing out. James A Demopoulos - Jeeper704 - 05-31-2007 Well, his luck ran out a little later. He got pretty shot up by enemy (artillery)fire in France, ended up in the hospital, got transferred to a Maintenance Company until he was fit enough to be sent to the 26th Division as infantryman (actually BAR-gunner). This was around December 10 - 12, 1944 ..... a few days later "The Bulge" broke out.
As he didn't have enough points to return with the 26th, he was - at war's end - transferred to 83rd and then to 42nd Division. He went back home around March - April 1946
I went to visit him back in 1992 and spent a wonderful time with him. He lives in the Southwest and I just loooooove the area.
Erwin James A Demopoulos - Jeeper704 - 05-31-2007 This is James Demopoulos as drawn by a Waffen-SS prisoner in 1945.
Erwin The drawing got water damage unfortunately. James A Demopoulos - Jeeper704 - 05-31-2007 His Dress Uniform when he was with 26th Division.
Erwin James A Demopoulos - Jeeper704 - 05-31-2007 One of his two Purple Hearts.
Erwin James A Demopoulos - Walt's Daughter - 05-31-2007 The drawing is priceless and beautiful, water damage and all. What a great piece of history to have. James A Demopoulos - Jeeper704 - 06-02-2007 It is a very nice drawing and is proudly displayed in my little "war room".
Here are two paintings a German PoW made. The patch is of the 26th Division.
Erwin James A Demopoulos - Jeeper704 - 07-25-2007 Yesterday, to my biggest surprise and amazement, I received a package from James. In it were lots of newspaper articles on WWII, Iraq, places to see in the US ...... but also his first Bronze Star Medal with case!
Talking about a nice gift. I never thought he would part with it and actually never asked for it either. I only told him to never throw it away when I was there in 1992. As you can see, I already have one of his Purple Hearts.
Pictures follow this weekend.
