US Army docs. - colinhotham - 01-22-2011 Can anyone translate this entry from a day report of a 359th Regt Combat Engineer:
EM from DS with RSO 359th Regt + dy
Colin.
US Army docs. - Jeeper704 - 01-22-2011 EM usually stands for Enlisted Men. I think the "+ dy" could mean + day (?).
Maybe you can copy the part of the report in which this is located?
Erwin US Army docs. - colinhotham - 01-23-2011 Sorry Erwin I do not have the document, the line was sent to me to see I I could identify what it meant. Colin. US Army docs. - Jeeper704 - 01-23-2011 Ah ok.
Maybe it was a list of Enlisted Men who were transferred to other duties in this unit. That happened a lot. Btw, "dy" could also mean "duty" ... so they would give the name and the (new) job they had to do. Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you.
I just noticed that on this forum there is something regarding the 359th Engineers.
Erwin US Army docs. - colinhotham - 01-24-2011 I now have the document, the person I'm interested in is Pfc Hoedel. The place is Lavant Downs, West Sussex and I have established that the US Army was encamped around this area near and in Goodwood in 1944. I have contacted Lavant Parish Council and although they did not know Lavant Downs there is a Lavant Downs housing estate, so it has been built on!
Colin. US Army docs. - Walt's Daughter - 01-25-2011 Hoedel is the last name of our forum buddy, AlaskanGal. That caught my eye. This has got to be Nancy's dad, for he was a 359th Engineer. OMG. Please PM AlaskanGal right away. US Army docs. - Walt's Daughter - 01-25-2011 http://www.6thcorpscombatengineers.com/RobertHoedel.htm US Army docs. - colinhotham - 01-26-2011 Yes Marion you are right. I've been doing some research for Nancy on the time in 1944 When her dad was in the UK. I found the place called Lavant Downs where the US Army was encamped and sent her some pics and a website link. I have some WWII items on their way from Alaskan Gal in Homer, that belonged to her dad and I'm hoping to identify these. Of course as well as sharing my findings with Nancy I will post them here.
Colin. US Army docs. - colinhotham - 02-01-2011 Thank you M1, a very useful link. I'm going out on a limb and wondering if Nancy's doc about her dad could mean:
Above 4 Enlisted Men (for) Detached Service (with the) Range Safety Officer ?????
This was a time of intense training for D-Day and range firing would have been carried out.
Colin. US Army docs. - colinhotham - 02-13-2011 Two interesting links to do with this subject. http://www.87thinfantrydivision.com/Commen...014/000014.html http://www.80thdivision.com/WebArchives/abbreviations.htm
