The 243rd Engineer Combat Battalion was activated at Camp Breckinridge, Ky on 15 Oct 1943 and assigned to the XX Corps. All officers and listed personnel were assigned to the newly activated battalion under command of Lt. Col H.E. Skinner. Transferred form the 5th Engineer Combat Regiment, the Cadre had been training as a unit in Iceland for quite some time. Returning to the states 1 July 1943, they reported after a brief furlough to Camp Breckenridge where, from 27 July to 6 December, they further augmented their experience by extensive training. The majority of the recruits were from the Third Service Command Reception Center but there were a few transferees from other outfits who had previous training of varying duration.
