There is only one picture of me in uniform. It was taken in Nov. 1945

when I was home after my discharge,(Army that is), The pic. is posted

in the Natl. WW II Memorial. I don't know how to transfer it here.

ACTIVITY DURING WWII

SERVED IN NORTH AFRICA AND ITALY WITH THE 135TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, 34TH DIVISION FROM MARCH 1943 TO OCTOBER 1945. AWARDED THE COMBAT INFANTRYMAN BADGE, BRONZE STAR, PURPLE HEART AND EUROPEAN-AFRICAN-MIDDLE EASTERN THEATER MEDAL, 5 BATTLE STARS.

 

Does the "battle star" signify you participated in a major campaign and what do they look like? I've recently came across a book titled "Great American Patriots" and it lists many veterans from my state and it lists their awards, several of those fellows were awarded battlestars and I was unusre of what it signified.

Bronze Star

Silver Star

The bronze star represents participation in campaigns or operations, multiple qualifications, or an additional award to any of the various ribbons on which it is authorized. The silver star is worn in the same manner as the bronze star, but each silver star is worn in lieu of five bronze service stars.

Silver/Bronze Stars

Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster

 

When worn together on a single ribbon, the silver star(s) will be worn to the wearer's right of any bronze star(s). The bronze oak leaf cluster represents second and subsequent entitlements of awards.

 

Silver Oak Leaf Cluster

Silver/Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters

 

The silver oak leaf cluster represents sixth, 11th, etc., entitlements or in lieu of five bronze oak leaf clusters. Silver oak leaf clusters are worn to the wearer's right of the bronze oak leaf clusters on the same ribbon.

The Valor Device

Valor Devices and Clusters

 

The "V" device represents valor and does not denote an additional award. Only one may be worn on any ribbon. The "V" device, when worn on the same ribbon with clusters, is worn to the wearer's right of such clusters.

This is the ribbon the men got for their service in the ETO. The bronze and silver stars mentioned above would be attached to it. Here is the background for that ribbon and the campaigns and landings associated with it.

 

For instance my father's ETO ribbon shows a silver star (5 campaigns) with a bronze arrowhead.

 

A bronze star is worn on the ribbon to indicate participation in designated campaigns. The designated campaigns for the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater are:

 

Egypt-Libya 11 Jun 42 - 12 Feb 43

Air Offensive, Europe 4 Jul 42 - 5 Jun 44

Algeria-French Morocco 8-11 Nov 42

A bronze arrowhead is worn on the ribbon to indicate participation in a combat parachute jump, combat glider landing, or amphibious assault landing within the EAME Theater.

Talking about Battle Stars;

A Battle Star signifies a major battle, No. Africa-Fonndouk, Casserine Pass,

Algeria, Sened Pass. hill 609, Italy Benevento, Casino Town and Monastery,

Anzio, Bologna,etc. etc.--I think now is the time to write what is on the

card I carry.

Back if Card Reads--

The bearer is a LIFETIME MEMBER OF THE FAMOUS THIRTY FOURTH INFANTRY

Division Association. This Division in World War II had the distinction of being

not only the FIRST to land in the EUROPEAN THEATER, but also had more days

in combat(over 600) than any other, and accredited with the capturing more

than 40,000 prisoners. The 34th ranked second to none and stands high on

the scroll of honor among the greatest fiighting units that ever carried the

Stars and Stripes into battle. Makes me proud to be INFANTRY.
