For the past several years I have been fortunate enough to be involved in getting a monument placed at Vicksburg National Battlefield commemerating the 9th Connecticut Volunteers that died during the seige of Vicksburg. Two states that were there, Vermont and Connecticut, did not have any monuments. Even though they were not "engineers" the task they were assigned was an engineering task. They were charged with rerouting the Mississippi River to leave the city of Vicksburg "high and dry" and allowing Federal boats free navigation of the river. The park system just put the monument photos up on the web site
