Major Rapael Guido Rombauer Grand Army Of The Republic

The Patriot Guard Riders have been invited to participate in the return

and burial of a Civil War Veteran 103 years after his death and 150 years

and 2 days after the signing of the treaty at Appomattox ending the Civil

War.

Major Rombauer served on General Grant's staff and participated in several

battles. His remains were at a funeral home and will be returned to

Carthage and laid to rest next to his wife and children. To quote the

Joplin Globe " the service for Rombauer may be one of the grandest

military funerals in this area for a long time".

Major Rombauer will be laid to rest with full military honors. The service

will involve an honor guard dressed in period dress along with members of

the Sons of Union Veterans, a musket salute and a cannon salute using a

cannon from Wilsons Creek Battlefield. To quote Steve Weldon, County

Archivist and Civil War Historian "This is not a re-enactment or living

history; this will be the real thing." This is a once in a life time

opportunity.

The Heartland Concert Band will start playing at

1:00 PM

. The ceremony

will start at

1:30 PM

. We will form a flag line along the route inside the

cemetery at 12;45PM. The flag line will consist of 3 groups. Group 1:

will stand the line from

12:45 to 1:15

, Group 2 will stand the line from

1:15 to 1:45

and Group 3 will stand the line to the end of the service.

Each group will have a different Ride Captain. Each group will consist of

about 35 riders.

Staging at the entrance to Park Cemetery, 801 South Baker Blvd, Carthage
