9TH INFANTRY DIVISION
#1

Can anyone shed any light on the 9th Infantry Division. T/5 Morris, my wifes dad, lived through the war and died just a few years ago. I never met him but my wife has his purple heart and his CIB (awarded 21 August 1944). She also has his discharge papers which list his Decorations and awards.

He was awarded the Distinguished Unit Badge, Purple heart, E A M E Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, American Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Under battles and campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland. At the end of this are GO 33 WD 45.

This discharge paper says he was wounded 11 June 1944.

Just as before I don't bring very much to the table but any information will be appreciated.

To Marion and the wonderful people of VI Corps.

Once again I think I have started with some mis informantion and because of this wasted some of your valuable time. For that I am truly sorry. Here is what I discovered that makes me think I screwed up.

Under organization his discharge has Company F 9th Infantry. So my pea brain leaped to the conclusion that it was 9th Infantry Div. I fear the Division part is wrong because in the Decorations and citations block after Purple Heart it has GO 56 (or General Order 56) Hq. 2nd Inf. Div 12 May 45.

Am I correct in assuming (yes I know what assuming really means) that he was a part of the 9th Infantry under the 2nd Infantry Division?

I went to a 2nd Infantry Division Web page and under order of battle found 9th Infantry as a part of it. Unit history has them comming ashore at Normandy on D+1. Am I off to the races or have I wrongly jumped to another conclusion?

He must have been just like all Vets who earned the CIB in that it is plain to see that he most valued his CIB and Purple Heart over everything else from the war because that was all he kept. My wife says that he always kept them in the little Purple Heart presentation box.

Marion and the gang......I am sorry for wasting your time and will try to be more careful in the future.

No apologies necessary. Sometimes it's difficult to ascertain what unit men were with. Confusing the regiments and divisions is VERY EASY to do and you aren't the first one to do so.

As far as a waste of time; it isn't. The info will be helpful to many others, so certainly won't be wasted! :pdt34:

Here is some info on the 2nd Infantry Division. There regiments were 9th, 38th and 23rd.

Marion,

As always thank you so much. The web sites you posted were very good. I easily found quite a bit of information on my father-in-law. My wife thanks you too. How is the book comming? Can't wait.

Pleased to help. As you know, I love to do research. I ALWAYS learn something too, so everyone gains. ;):D

The book is coming along fine. I appreciate you asking. If you or anyone else is interested, I have been posted to my section every now and then. I placed my intro chapter there, so feel free to read it.

Many of the vets have been sending me new stories over the past few weeks and new photos too. It's very exciting.

I plan to place other excerpts from the book as I go along this year, so stay tuned for more...

I'd be tickled if you read it because it hasn't had many hits over the past month. Sigh!
