Hey Daan,

Thanks for the input.

I decided to keep the shirt, it took me too much effort to get an id-ed one and to gather the info about this GI.

I heard similar stories.

In fact, one Veteran I knew personally got ripped off like that.

It's shocking hearing things happening like that and it gives the more honest people a bad name as well.

Take care,

Erwin

Hey there,

I am in WV but no where near Parkersburg. You could try to contact the local VFW or American Legion post. He may have been a member.

The county court house keeps the DD214s. It will be located in the county where he lived when he was discharged. You will run into trouble because you're not a relative, though. BUT!! You could always tell them it is for geneology and just don't divulge any more than that. If pressed further, I'm sure you could come up with something.... my wife's grand uncle, I think I'm his illlegitimate child, etc... :D

Best of luck to you and keep us posted.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

You never know.

If pressed further, I'll reply "well, that Jerry keeps denying my grandfather was his, so it must be the American as there were no Englishmen present that day. ".

Can't use "my wife's grand uncle" as my hopefully-soon-to-be wife is not American nor Belgian.

Hopefully, that guy from the museum can find out Eyth's unit.

Thanks again for the tip.

Struck another blank. :banghead:

The VA Regional Office of Buffalo replied stating that Mr. Eyth never filed for VA benefits.

Still waiting for a reply from that museum curator.

Well, I guess that "curator" was bogus after all.

He didn't even bothered to reply when I said I was not going to donate nor sell the shirt and tie to anyone.

Ah well, the search continues ......

Obviously he didn't go far from home. Have you tried census records? Wouldn't give you anything on his military history, but it may help you with some family names.

Did you try the local VFW post or American Legion?

Erwin,

Did you know that there is a Baker Eyth House listed in Parkersburg? If you google it, an address comes up. Eyth is not a real common name. I tried to find an Inn keepers name, but couldnt find one. Perhaps they are relatives. Or could tell you who they bought the inn from.

Would make a nice honeymoon visit for visiting Europeans....Near some Civil War Battlefields, great Southern food, Lovely scenery.

I'll follow that up as well.

Maybe they are relatives, I might find out.

Hello Erwin,

Even though this post is a bit older I am very much hoping that you will reply to this.

We are looking for relatives that have emigrated to the States and we stumbled across these forum entries when doing a google search. We believe that Cecelia Goetz is a relative of my great great grandfather Joseph Goetz who had a grocery shop in Dettingen (near Diessen).

I am hoping that you might have found some relatives of Conrad and Joseph Eyth following your exchanges in this forum. I really would appreciate if you could update us on your results in this search as we are facing calling several hundreds of Eyths in and around Parkersburg WV in order to get further. If you were successful this would save us a lot of time.

We assume that there must be relatives as Joseph Eyth sent x-mas cards etc. to my great grandparents after WWII and signed them "the Eyth family".

Thanks for your assistance!

Susi
