For you who know some German (Yes, I could have saved it for the 6th of June but I'll be busy then!):

. . .

. . .

Und Goebbels brüllt ins Mikrofon:

"Wo bleibt Eure Invasion?"

Am 6. Juni um Mitternacht,

Da hat's geblitzt, da hat's gekracht

Und alle Leute wußten's schon:

Zip, zip, di dudela, die Invasion.

Lastensegler, Fallschirmspringer

Und noch and're schöne Dinger

- Bombenteppich monoton:

Zip, zip, di dudela, die Invasion.

Und auf dem Festland ist man drauf

Und nach Berlin geht jetzt der Lauf.

Berliner Luden hotten schon:

Zip, zip, di dudela, die Invasion.

Offiziere, Helferinnen

Wälzen sich in weißen Linnen,

Plötzlich ging das Telephon,

Zip, zip, di dudela, die Invasion.

Die Hitlerjugend, groß und klein,

Die mußten in den Volkssturm rein,

. . . .

Soll das die Vergeltung sein?

Ah yes, May 8 1945. A great day to be still alive. We were in a small village in Austria about half way between Berchtesgaden (*our last objective) and Salzburg (our home for a couple of months). We occupied civilian houses during this time and enjoyed the comfort after battle conditions for so long.

A great celibration for the wars end i n the ETO and prayed for the end in the PTO also. It was great to live like a human once again and plan to see another day safely.

THANK YOU ALL ETO VETERANS!

Earlier in the week I wrote a letter to the local newspaper which was published on Wednesday. I had noticed that there was no mention of V-E Day on either of my calendars. I won't bore you with the whole thing, but it said basically that Friday was V-E Day, and we should not forget to say Thank You to our ETO Vets on Friday. I also mentioned the fact that this day is no longer marked on many calendars and is seldom mentioned in the newspapers and/or TV news of most larger cities in the USA...unlike the 1950's and 1960's when you couldn't find a calendar without noting the May 8. 1945 surrender of Germany to Allied Commanders.

ps- might mention that May 9th is still celebrated annually in places like Ukraine and nations of the former commie bloc. Strange thing: In 1945 our boys came home to great fanfare, while many Red Army vets who had been captured by the krauts were treated like traitors and imprisoned by Stalin and NKVD criminals. Since the fall of communism ALL veterans of WWII are once again honored for the victory over the "Hitlerites!" this info from my friend Max in Ukraine, who ask me to please say thank you to American Veterans who fought against the Germans. THANK YOU!

My CO prevented me from ending my letters to German personnel with "We kicked your rumps in 45". :banghead:<_<
