SOS ( Mess Hall Delight )

Chipped beef on toast has a different name.

For those that know, you know it it isn't printable.

For those who don't, recall you asked for it

To my fellow Marines and friends.

Does this bring back memories?

Looks like a pretty good recipe if you're interested in trying SOS again...

I like it better with chipped beef vice hamburger...

This is the original messhall recipe that Marines have thrived on for 230

years (1775-2006).

For you non believers, try it once over biscuits, hash brown spuds or toast

and you think you

have died and gone to heaven. You Marines already know how great Marine

Corps SOS is,

so print out this email because it's a keeper. For you first timers, when

you get it ready to eat,

give me a call and I'll come over and help judge the quality of your SOS.

Good eating and Semper Fi.

Bill

Looks like Papa started something here. A resurgence of that great American cuisine that millions of us GI's couldn't get enough of in "DUBYA DUBYA 2"

I've been told that they have SOS in the freezer depts. in the super markets, but haven't been able to locate it yet. I imagine they have sanitized the name, so you will probably find it under a French name, just to give it a bit of class. I Plan on making some tomorrow night. Tonight I am having another American favorite---- fried eggplant. Oh Man!!!, look at all the turned up noses out there. Bet you don't like rutabega either. Don't you ever get sick of eating such mundane things as steak & lobster.

That's it. I think I"ll combine the two. I'll name it --- " S.O.S.E.P. " YEAH.

" ---- on sliced egg plant. "

You're all invited over tomorrow night ---R.S.V.P. :joker:

Okay, I am now ringing Pavlov's Bell. :woof::woof::woof: Any dogs out there? Okay who is salivating?

Wish we all lived closer. We could have a party and have SOS along with all the other local variations! :pdt12::pdt12:

Hey Rocky, I love Mexican food too. S'pose I like most food. :clappin::pidu: Have to throw in some beer or wine too. I feel a fiesta coming on.

Well I'll just have to stick to :coffee: this morning.

N OTE: THe ground hamburg is a modern item. In the early days it was sausage! THE same white gravy used with the chipped beef was made from sausage fat. Just add milk or water to your flour. Then slowly stir it into your fat.

In Oct 43 basic the Camp Wheeler GA. cooks called the chipped beef and gravy on toast SOS In todays VAMC at Martinsburg W VA. the white gravy with sausage is served with home frys, eggs or a biscuit. I never miss it when I have an APPT. there.

At first I was like, YUCK. Then it began to resemble gravy.

I like it made with sausage, flour, milk, and a little bit of pepper.

pdhinkle, you live near Martinsburg? You may be the closest one on VI Corps site to me! I'm in southern WV.

Hey Roque: It also makes a damn good midnite snack on saltines and topped off with

a bit of medium hot salsa. Prefer mine with a Jack Daniels and water to cool things

down a bit. A midnite raid on the icebox (pardon me refrigerator) is quite common.

But, actually, we rarely had hot (warm) meals and each was a special treat, specially

ground coffee which somehow they managed to keep reasonably hot. A real treat after

a steady diet of K and C rations and powdered coffee. I think you will agree Roque.
