The 1116th Engineer Combat Group arrived in England on January 17, 1944. It comprised the 147th, 149th and 203rd Engineer Combat Battalions.
This group was redesignated the 6th Engineer Special Brigade (ESB) on January 20, 1944.
Col. Paul W. THOMPSON was in command of this new Brigade in March 1944, while Col. Lucius CHASE was his Executive Officer.
The 6th ESB (strength about 6,630 men) was under overall control of the Provisional Engineer Special Brigade Group (Brig. General William M. HOGE), activated February 17, 1944.
Its purpose: to coordinate the activities of both the 5th and 6th E.S.B. elements on Omaha Beach.
The 6th ESB was responsible for sector 'CHARLIE - DOG Green/White/Red - EASY Green', and supported the 29th Infantry Division.
