My mother was a class of 1942 graduate of Boston Teachers College
and she worked part time in a big office in downtown Boston to
pay for school. She told the story that someone would open the
office door and yell: "Stockings at Filenes!" and all the woman would
jump up & RUN out. If someone had yelled "Fire!"instead , they wouldn't
have run as fast.
If her sister Patsy had a date, she'd ask Helen to lend her a pair of stockings.
When she'd return em, they'd always have runs in them & my mother'd be mad
as a hornet!
I'm old enough to remember garters & stockings. We thought pantyhose
was the greatest invention!
