Because I can't swim well, being on a convoy just about "creeps me out". I can't imagine a long journey being made across the Atlantic, especially at night! The entire journey would have been so damned nerve-wrecking. And to think of being hit AT NIGHT on the open seas. It sends chills down my spine. What a lonely, frightening experience! 
I'm sure the book conveys all that and more. Sounds like a very interesting read...
