THE GARIAN LADY.
70 miles south of Tripoli towards the edge of the Sahara high in the Jebel lies the old WWII Italian army barracks
of Garian. In March 1943 while serving with the 8th Army as a volunteer ambulance driver, American Clifford Saber
painted a large mural depicting (in pin-up style) a girl lying on her side in the form of the Libyan coastline with
various places marked on.
After the war this became a popular tourist attraction and I visited it in 1965 whilst serving with the RAF in
North Africa.
