.......... I find it a bit strange that the M-2 carbines were used in training that early as few were made during that period ..........

I can't recall how many M-2s there were -- probably twenty or so -- they were not designated for any particular training -- they were just part of the mix. We did not use them for normal qualification firing for it was too easy to knock the selector lever into fully automatic mode and most ordinary GIs could not then handle the weapon properly on the range.

 

Only firing range instructors shot them for required familiarization.
