A general reference was made about the engineers during the advance north of Rome in June 1944..
"During the first few days after the fall of Rome, the division engineers were occupied almost entirely in following Highway 1 to effect frequent minor road repairs, make hasty by-passes, and clear out scattered mines along the way. Each of the lettered engineer companies, however moved closely behind the infantry to support them should major difficulties be encoutnered."

Another quote a little later.
Place: North of Rome, after capture of Magliano and pause at Albegna River.
Unit: 142nd Regiment of 36th Texas Division
"On 13 June, the 111th Engineers completed two footbridges across the Albegna watercourse which allowed the wheeled and tracked vehicles of the 143rd Infantry Regiment to move against the two German strongpoints on Hills 124 and 48. After the divisional artillery had registered on these points, forward observers reported much enemy movement to the regimental front. This proved to be a prelude to hot action beginning the night of the 13th. ...... but the hill was finally taken around twelve noon, along with 27 prisoners of war."
A few pages later, it describes another incident, but I'm not sure if this is the same unit. It refers to them as division engineers but the reference footnote is from the Op Reports of the 111th Engineers.

"On June 21 two division engineers, Lt. Robert A. Findlay of Paterson, NJ, and Private Jorge A. Diaz of Laredo, TX, were making an armed reconnaissance and came upon Italian partisans storming an enemy stronghold. They elected themselves to lead the attack and in the process the combined force captured 114 German soldiers."

This source seems to imply the 111th Engineers were assigned to the 36th Infantry Division and thus were the "division engineers", I guess.
On June 26th, the 36th Infantry Division was relieved by the 442nd RCT and moved back to an assembly point near Rome. Their fighting was over in Italy.
