292nd Engineer Combat Battalion (New Member)

Randy,

Is there any way to have this any more legible to read the lower right column. Was trying to see if I could identify any of the men in my photos with the marching party list.

Thanks,

Ken

Ken,

I'm sorry but these documents were copied from microfilm and some of the images such as this one were very poor. Some of these names and service numbers are practically unreadable from the paper copy I have. I assume you are looking for the first names of Gardecki ,Kosmari, and Moran. I do not believe any of these names appear in the lower right column of the list where the image is especially poor. I have not run across these names in any of the other materials I have but will keep an eye out for them. I did notice that your grandfather's name, Anton Pagoria, is the 12th from the bottom in the right column of the list, did you see that?

Have a good one Ken!

Ok, sorry for the repost but figured one more out from the good conduct list that Randy posted Robert Herzig is Herzie....He was not in the marching orders list for Company A, Randy if you possibly posted the rest we may be able to figure out a few more. Esp. Kosmari and Moran since I have them pin pointed in photos.

Ken

Ken,

There was only one page for the Marching Party list.

Gary,

Looking into this.. May be able to get the photo and take a photo of the photo with panoramic camera I have.

Ken,

Just as with the A company photo, the plan would be to make a high res image available to anyone and thus spread the wealth so to speak. I am very versed at assembling multiple scans of images that could not be scanned at one time (having done this for many images in my family and for others). Let me just clarify, you have the platoon image scanned by someone else and you assembled multiple pieces of the scans back into one image? If so then what is the resolution and size of the assembled image?

Thanks for sharing, my friend! It's gestures like this that allow us to continue to move forward in our quest. :)

Hello Everyone,

We just got back from our trip to Branson Wednesday, had a wonderful time, weather cooperated for the most part while we were there. Ralph lives close by Branson and was able to visit with him on this trip. He and I had met once before this back in 2011, not long after we first made contact. He was most kind to invite me into his home and I feel like we had a very good visit sharing photographs, personal items, and stories from our relatives in the 292nd. I plan on posting these things I have shared with him on the forum, starting with my grandfather's address book. My aunt gave me this book shortly after Ralph and I first met in 2011. It includes addresses of family and hometown friends as well but I was pleasantly surprised to see Ralph's dads name the first time I opened it up.While Ralph and I were looking at this book we noticed that Leonard DeMello's name was in it, he being the subject of a few recent posts. Have a good one everybody.

Randy at his best yet again! :) Great job, my friend!

A couple of observations... there is a Stephen E. Long listed on page two which interesting enough I ran across in trying to identify guys in the unit photo in a Dixon newspaper article. Also, on page 3 there is a M. Nelson Weaver listed. This was the poor fella who died on Jan 1, 1945 from non battle injuries (which we are still trying to determine). Since the addresses seem to be in the soldiers own handwriting and considering when Weaver died (as well as the fact that he is on page 3) that would tend to imply that Randy's grandfather must have started the list pretty early on. Interesting...

Folks,

Take a look and tell me if you think that this may be Walter J. Lenz 31 409 966. Found an early photo of him and cropped out of the A company photo a guy I though t may be him.

Here's another one, folks. Victor C. Rometo SN 33 708 255 was awarded a Good Conduct Medal on March 28, 1945. I found a yearbook photo from the 1937 Tarentum High School in PA. I also found a photo that was listed as him on leave in Paris in 1945 along with a guy that may be him from the A Company photo. Any ideas?

An interesting tidbit that I never noticed, but A Company must have had a mascot. This little dog is with the guys in front of the officers in the company photo. Clearly, the dog was moving and turning his head when the photo was taken and the photographer must have had a slow shutter speed... hence, the dogs head is blurred almost to to a point of completely disappearing.

Gary,

Lenz and Rometo both look like good matches to me. I wasn't sure about Rometo until I compared his right ear from the high school photo.

Randy,

What great news about the Company C photo coming out cleanly. I agree that taking it to a local printer is a good idea. If the business you've ID'ed doesn't work out, I'd suggest finding someone who does business in photo restorations. If we can get copies later, I'll be interested in getting one for the Camp Butner Society.

The Company C shots bring me back to an old mystery: Who are the white-coated guys in the Company A photo? There aren't any in the Company C photo.

Thanks for chiming in on this, Lisa. :) Many of the guys start to look the same after looking at the picture and faces as much as I have done recently. Getting a copy for the Camp Butner Society is a wonderful idea! Let us know if we can assist in any way with this. Did they end up with an A Company photo?

The 292nd had a Medical Detachment and I have to believe these guys were members of it. The original roster of guys transferred from the 165th Engineer Combat Battalion on November 5, 1943 showed three to the 292nd Medical Detachment: S/Sgt Richard D. Wardlaw SN 14 016 538, Tec3 Merwin E. Ferber SN 14 020 213 and Tec5 Ralph C. Thompson SN 34 640 345. As with the others on the unit photo, now we must attempt to identify them.

Onward and Upward! :)

Gary,

Nice job! Here is a picture of Stephen Long that Ralph had sent me sometime ago. I know you don't see much of his face because of the pistol. I was thinking Ralph had another picture of him, maybe Ralph will post that if he does.

Good observations about the address book. I looked through some old emails and found a couple of scans Ralph had sent me, showing some names and addresses his father had. As you can see there are some of the same names and the same handwriting.
