VE-Day - Where were you?
#1

Al Kincer, 48th Combat Engineer wrote to me today. Anyone care to jump in?

Sixty two years ago I was in Berchtesgaden, May 8 1945. Where were you. The War was over!!!

I was with the 3rd Bn. 157th Inf. of the 45th Division. We had just departed Dachau and vicinity and were in the Munich suburb of Laim. I was scheduled for R&R and a trip to London on 12 May. It never happened. Instead we got the word and the celebration began on the 8th.I have already written about taking up my mattress and belongings and moving into the cellar. They called me chicken and they were right. I had survived the war to date and when I saw the dangerous mix of schnaps, loaded weapons and celebrating soldiers, I headed foir safety. In the middle of the night someone on the floor above, we were in an apartment house, discharged his rifle--throiugh the floor and right into my empty bed. By morning my cellar was crowded with other "chickens." Then the count down to homebound began.

We were in a small village halfway between Berchtesgaden and Salzburg celibrating wars end in ETO. After our 3rd Bn, 7th Inf Reg. 3rd Inf. Div. captured Berchtesgaden on May 4th '45, and raised the American flag on May 5th ' 45 . We recieved orders to "get the hell out ". We left Berchtesgaden to the 101 A.. B. Div who arrived on May 5th and the tourist troops who flocked in. I believe we left on May 6 '45 to a villiage nearby for our celibration there.. However we left with many truckloads of choice drinkables which were distributed for our celibration on V.E. day. The war in ETO was over thank God.

I guess our capturing and clearing Berchestagaden was not appreciated by some,. but, Ce Leguerre . ?

Verow, those puptents and jeeps sure brought back some memories !!!! Didn't notice if the tents were the two piece type or not. Ours were the two piece, I carried on half and my buddy carried the other. I had the pegs and he had the poles. In the foxhole we used the half to cover us. Lotsa memories. NICE PICTURES, THANK YOU. I talked to my friend in Ukraine who told me that today is a national holiday to celebrate the Great Victory. How many people here in the USA under the age of 40 are even aware of the significance of this day? :( (besides those who belong to forums like this one!)
