43rd Engineer Battalion (Heavy) (Combat)

Interesting letter!

Hello,

I was wondering if you might be able to point me in the right direction. I've been trying to research the unit history of one of the units I was stationed in but I'm hitting a brick wall.

During the course of the 20 years I spent in the Army as an Engineer, one of the units I served in was the " from 1990 to 1994. As with all the other units I was in, I was required to memorize the 43rd's history.

Well, in this particular unit that I was assigned to, the 43rd's history was sorely lacking and had many gaps in it's early WWII exploits which I'm trying to piece together. So far, after 8 months of trying, I haven't had much luck. This is pretty much the reason I'm writting to you today.

What I was wanting to ask you is if you might know anyone who was assigned to the unit from early 1942 to 1943 when the unit was (then) the "43rd Engineer General Services Regiment"?

In particular, I'm trying to find out the following information.....

1.) On what ship did the unit sail on when it left the States for Australia?

2.) What was the departure date from the States and the arrival date to Australia?

3.) Are there any pictures available of the unit when it was constructing "Carson's Airfield"

(now known as RAAF Tindal) which is the Northern Territory outside of Darwin?

4.) How would I find "ANY" information on the construction of Carson's Field such as when

did construction begin and end and what was the layout of the base?

5.) How many airfields did the unit construct?

Anyhow, that's pretty much all I had to ask. I appreciate your taking the time to read and consider this and for any insight you might be able to provide.

=================

For most of 1941 Engineer troops spent 12 weeks in basic military and engineer training. (Units located at Ft. Belvoir on Dec. 7, 1941 were: 43rd Engineer (General Services) Regiment; 84th Engineer (Camouflage) Battalion; 85th Engineer (Heavy Ponton) Battalion; 95th Engineer (Separate) Battalion (Colored) ). This was later reduced to 8 weeks in December of 1941, and then changed back to 12 weeks in 1942.
