after a long time, I post a picture of a Social Security card, found by my friend in the area of Monterenzio (near Bologna).

A friend of mine asked me if I could find some more information, and I turn to you this request

A metal social security card? Was that the original material used for those?

No, the goverment never issued metal cards. Metal & plastic cards were made and sold by private companies, sometimes as advertizing gimicks. They seem to have popular in the 1960s.

I'll keep my eyes open. A precursory search this morning (just a general Google search) didn't turn up anything.

 

We'll go to NARA next and see what happens.

The material is all painted brass. The finding is interesting because I do not think that the soldiers were to bring these cards in combat...
