Well it took some time but I may have cracked "Makeshift Dog" mystery.
I have found other references to Makeshift (Makeshift 2 or S-2 Makeshift) in the Compilation of Messages sent between the 1109th Engineering Combat Group and the associated Engineer Battalions of the Group of which the 157th was part of but this offered no explanation. Finally, while researching about the commander of the 1109th Engineer Combat Group, Col. Sorely, I found that the invasion code name given to the 1109th was Makeshift! I believe that Group Headquarters probably went by that name for their messages to the different Battalions and for the song, who would want to tell Hq what your doing anyways, so long as you get the job done!?!?
