Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 08-23-2019, 09:25 AM - Forum: VI CORPS AND 5TH & 7TH ARMIES - Replies (1)

Received this, this week. And I want to add that John Fallon is still with us.

Hello all,

Holly and I send our best wishes out to the 36th Combat Engineers family.

We hope all is well.

I wanted share the attached photo that I received today from the American Legion Post 331 in Stone Harbor, NJ.

Holly, my brothers and I ordered the Memorial Pavers last fall for dad & Tony.

I don’t know who donated John’s, but I had tears in my eyes when I opened the photo and saw all three of them, side by side almost 75 years after first serving together and then being friends for the rest of their lives!

Dad would have been 100 and Tony 104 later this fall.

We miss them and all their former comrades in the 36th!

Thanks again from our family for taking such good care of them all during those last reunion years!

Stay Rugged!

Best Regards,

Ted & Holly Furtado

1284th Combat Engineer Company B Song (Elsie)
Posted by: Procyon2014 - 08-21-2019, 01:02 PM - Forum: LOOKING FOR... - No Replies

Hello, I have a question regarding one of the favorite songs that is listed in the pdf booklet on the 1284th Combat Engineer's booklet: http://www.6thcorpscombatengineers.com/docs/1284th%20Engineers/1284th%20Book.pdf

I'm asking because there was a question on a reddit subreddit about a song someone's grandfather sang, which is very similar to the song on page 12 of the above booklet.  The song is called 'Elsie'.  Does anyone with family members that belonged to this Company know the origin of this song?  One theory is that the song was inspired by the Alabama folk song 'Merry Girl' as this Company had members from almost every state, including Alabama and the lyrics are very similar.  The Company B song appears to be (to put it politely) about a woman with not the best reputation while the folk song is sung from a totally different perspective, but there are many similarities.  Thanks to anyone with info on this.

I'm going to crosspost this to one of the other forums, perhaps the WWII tunes forum, if that is allowed.

Farewell Brian Guy - 246 Field Co Royal Engineers
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 07-30-2019, 04:58 PM - Forum: Announcements, Get Well Wishes & Farewells - Replies (1)

One of our very own, Brian Guy - 246 Field Company Royal Engineers, has passed. He not only took part in our forum, beginning in 2004, but shared his story on our main site.

Now you've joined a large group of sappers in the sky! Farewell my English friend. M1

After a short illness my army veteran grandfather Brian Guy has passed away in his sleep. He was one of the dwindling number World War 2 veterans still alive.

One of his proudest memories in the war was as a sapper aiding with the capture of Pegasus Bridge in Normandy. He published his memories in his book ‘Cameos of War’.

Injured during the War he had to live with debilitating injuries to his legs, shrapnel in his body amongst other ailments throughout his life but his determination to survive allowed him to reach a grand age into his 90’s.

In the 1980s he was told he only had weeks to live, discharged himself from hospital and through force of will managed to recover and to live alongside my grandmother to this day. Even in failing health he was determined to remain independent.

Brian Guy senior was a proud man who remained devoted to his family and my Grandmother Sheila throughout his life. He was known for his devilish sense of humour and strong sense of character (he would not mind me saying he could be a stubborn git at times).

He will be greatly missed by his family and the service he gave to our country should not be forgotten.

I love you very much Grandad, safe journey to whatever happens next, I hope you are at peace and I will miss you very much my old mate.

James Guy
