  Appomattox Signing Anniversary
Posted by: civilwargal - 04-08-2011, 02:20 PM - Forum: The US Civil War - Replies (4)

Saturday is the anniversary of the Surrender of Appomatox. (That is if the Government is still up in running-otherwise the re-enactors will have to go home)

Here is a short synopsis of what happened that day. The signing took place in Wilmer Macleans house and the Union Generals picked the place clean for souvenirs. Maclean had moved there when a shell destroyed his kitchen at his house at Manasses. It was said that the war started in his kitchen and ended in his living room.

  1289th Combat Engineers
Posted by: CombatGirl - 04-06-2011, 06:16 PM - Forum: Introduce Yourself! - Replies (27)

Hello all! I am currently doing research on my Grandfather who was in the 1289th Combat Engineer Battalion. I have hit a wall in my research and am hoping to find some leads here. My husband is currently serving his second tour in Afghanistan so military history is very important in our family :)If you have any info on this group please let me know... My grandfather was also with the 3939th QM, I have some pictures of him and his buddies in europe as well as what I believe to be the Phillipines. Any help is appreciated!

  Buried where?
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 04-06-2011, 04:58 PM - Forum: Jokes & Fun! - Replies (2)

Obama goes on a State visit to Israel. While he is on a tour of Jerusalem, he has a fatal heart attack. The undertaker tells the US diplomats: "You can have him shipped home for $1 million or you can bury him here in the Holy Land for $100". The US diplomats go into a huddle and come back to the undertaker and tell him they still want Obama flown home. The undertaker is puzzled and asks: "Why would you spend $1 million to get him home when it would be wonderful to be buried here in this religious country and you would only spend $100?" One diplomat replied: "More than 2000 years ago a man died here, was buried here, and just 3 days later he rose from the dead. We simply can't take that risk!"

Two members have a birthday today!

pdhinkle, Don Burgett

A joyous and sad occasion! HUH?

Well Paul is no longer with us, but I never fail to extend birthday wishes to heaven. Paul was a very dear friend and I miss him very much.

Don Burgett is still with us and is celebrating his 86th birthday today. I just stopped by his forum to send my best.

Mount Sinai photo exhibit - Through your eyes...
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 04-03-2011, 09:17 PM - Forum: News and Events - No Replies

Received this, this week. If you can, please participate in this wonderful tribute/remembrance.

On Sunday, May 1 Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries will observe Yom HaShoah with a photo exhibition of Holocaust Memorials around the world. Observances will be held at Mount Sinai Simi Valley, 6150 Mount Sinai Drive, Simi Valley, CA 93063, from 10:00 am-11:30am, with photos on exhibit afterwards.

It would be especially meaningful if you and other liberators would participate in this exhibition by sharing photographs of memorials, along with a brief reflection on the impact the memorial had. Details are on the attached.

Complimenting the visual display at “Through Your Eyes: Holocaust Memorials Around the World” will be excerpts from “100 Voices: A Journey Home,” a musical documentary film that tells the history of Jewish culture in Poland. Joining us to sing and share their experiences in the creation of this documentary will be nine leading Los Angeles area Cantors who were featured in the film.

We look forward to hearing from you and to learning how we can assist you.
