Well, his luck ran out a little later.
He got pretty shot up by enemy (artillery)fire in France, ended up in the hospital, got transferred to a Maintenance Company until he was fit enough to be sent to the 26th Division as infantryman (actually BAR-gunner).
This was around December 10 - 12, 1944 ..... a few days later "The Bulge" broke out.
As he didn't have enough points to return with the 26th, he was - at war's end - transferred to 83rd and then to 42nd Division.
He went back home around March - April 1946
I went to visit him back in 1992 and spent a wonderful time with him.
He lives in the Southwest and I just loooooove the area.
