  epicenter of east coast earthquake
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 08-29-2011, 06:38 AM - Forum: Jokes & Fun! - No Replies

The USGS has determined that the epicenter of the August 2011 earthquake on the east coast was in a cemetery just outside of DC. The cause appears to be all of our founding fathers rolling over in their graves.

Hmmm, I kept saying the founding fathers were doing exactly just that, for months now. Seems I was right! :P:o

Farewell Vincent P. Pankoke Sr. - 36th Engineer
Posted by: Walt's Daughter - 08-28-2011, 07:02 PM - Forum: Announcements, Get Well Wishes & Farewells - No Replies

Marion,

It is with a sad heart that I inform you of my Dad's (Vincent P. Pankoke Sr.) passing on August 25 in his home of Johnstown, PA at the age of 87. He was in the 36th 3rd Bat, I company from 1942-1945. He was a replacement to the 36th and joined up with them in North Africa. He passed on to me many vivid memories of the Anzio campaign and the invasion of Southern France. I just found an old yellowed teletype of his Bronze star write up from Jan 19, 1945, from Baerenthal, France signed by Major General Frederick. Your web site and the daily reports helped me research this day of his life. For that I am very grateful.

I was really trying to get him well enough for a visit to this years reunion. I will try to get some of his photos scanned and sent to you to share with the other 36ers.

Vince Pankoke Jr.

Parkland, Florida

Dear Vince:

So very sorry to hear of your recent loss. I was really looking forward to meeting him, but alas, it was not to be.

  German "Robot" Bombs
Posted by: Mary Zashin - 08-28-2011, 10:51 AM - Forum: ANYTHING WWII - Replies (6)

Because of the new technology, it's interesting to read news reports of the early V1 and V2 rockets. Because the weapons were unmanned, the news media refered to them as "robot bombs". The attached story from July '44 is about the V2 rocket.

The V2 was ahead of its time, so if the war had not ended so soon the Germans might have been able to build a rocket capable of hitting the US.

Tom
